It’s Foundational

At the beginning of this month, I was part of another Three-Day Challenge.

This one was about “Creating a Devotional Lifestyle with God”.

At some point in each challenge there are what are called “Activation Questions”.

These questions help the participant to “work through” what has just been taught to them.

There are also specific “keys” to help us along the way.

The key that stuck to me the most was key #3;

You can’t get to the new you from the old you.

In this particular lesson, we were told that we are not responsible for fixing our “old life”.

Instead, we are responsible to receive what God tells us, and then focus on “being” with Him, and not particularly on “doing” everything there is to be done.

I want to share with you a couple of the “Activation Questions”, and my answer to them.

I am positive that the answers will not be the end of my thoughts, but that they will continue to simmer in my heart and mind until the process is complete.

It has been my experience that the process should simply be allowed to flow, and not be rushed.

I hope this will encourage you to consider some things in your life that you may not have thought of before.

Question #1; Based on what you have heard, what do you think you may need to “Unlearn?”. Any old habits, perceptions or mindsets about devotional life with God that you may want to lay aside?

Mostly, I need to keep learning, and relearning that I am not doing it wrong.

There really is no wrong way to have a devotional lifestyle.

From the physical place, or posture that I take for prayer, to the words, that I speak.

A heart that is tuned to Him, will most certainly get it right.

Question #2; What new perspectives of God’s thoughts towards you, and your freedom, from striving and performance, do you want to choose instead?

I need to continue to learn again and again, that the way I; am, look, think, relate, is not defective.

I am just how God created me, and that in itself will make my devotional life different than anyone else’s.

The purpose He has for me and my devotional life is constantly growing.

Line upon line. Precept upon precept. Little by little.

Last years projects, troubles, joys, slip ups, stand stills, happiness’s, and woes, and how I handled them in my devotional life, are simply foundational for what comes next.

What I have learned has not been made irrelevant.

It may not even be used at this time, but instead, is foundational to whatever comes next.

Tall buildings need deep foundations, made from strong materials.

While digging these foundations, time can drag on slowly, and at times even seem to stop all together.

We may have to wait for inclement weather to pass by.

We may have to fix broken tools, or learn different skill sets.

Perhaps new materials are to be delivered, and all we can do is wait.

These things take time. Building strength and quality cannot be rushed.

I look forward to a quality product, and even a considerably larger devotional life.

2020 has given me the tools to be able to wait with out angst.

God’s timing is perfect.

Would your answer to these questions echo mine?

Or would they look completely different?

I would love it if you’d share a thought or two with me.

Until next time …

What’s grabbing You?

Who are you quoting?

What thoughts are you having?

What life are you living?

“We go where we look” Tim McGraw

“If you build it, he will come.” Kevin Costner

“Inside of me there are two dogs. One is mean and evil and the other is good and they fight each other all the time. When asked which one wins I answer, the one I feed the most.” Sitting Bull

“If you feed them they will come” Bruce Martin – About church functions.

We’ve all heard these kinds of sayings.

Do we take them seriously?

Probably, but only for a moment.

Then our usual habits sneak back in, and we find ourselves doing the same things over and over again.

It takes some real tenacity to continue on the road to success; whatever you deem that success to be.

What I’m about to share with you is basically the same thing.

Whatever you give you time to, helps to create who you are.

So with the next two quotes, I’ll give you my personal recommendation.

These two ideas were placed in my head several years ago, (2008?) they grabbed me, and have had me ever since.

This is not to say that I get them right all of the time, but it is to say that I have found them tremendously helpful.

The person speaking was Graham Cooke.

First; “If you don’t like the thought you’re having, then have another thought.”

Second; “Opposition attaches itself to what you do not remove.”

So how does this removal work?

How can I do that?

By reinventing your walk in the Fruit of the Spirit.

People spend copious amounts of time trying to reinvent themselves, only to find themselves the same, or worse than they were before.

Only by REMOVING the old thoughts, can the new ones take over.

I refer you to the Holy Bible,  Galatians 5.

The whole chapter is enlightening, but I point you to verse 22-23 which says; But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

Against such things there is no law; simply means you can’t go wrong!

This means to me that there is great power in these fruits.

So here’s the thing;

If in your life you are seeing the opposite; hatred, bitterness, anger, strife, jealousy,

(The list is long I suppose, and different for each of us.)

then I would encourage you to choose the “Fruit” that is opposite of your issue, and

“Have another thought”.

Look where you’re going.

Feed the right thing.

Build a place inside you where the “Fruit” can be attracted to and grow.

Feed the right things – and more will begin to appear in your mind and in your heart.

One last quote;

“You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet, and the books you read.” Charlie Tremendous Jones

I encourage you to choose your reading, your friends, and your thinking wisely.

It makes all the difference.

Until next time.

Red Sky at Morning

Have you heard the saying “Red sky at morning is a sailors warning?”

Beautiful, right? But what it does, at  least for me, is to make me check the weather forecast. Today, unfortunately, it means we’ll have ice. Lots of ice. Making travel quite treacherous, and cancelling a lot of well laid plans.

So what’s next? We check our resources, and make sure that we have what it takes to be inside our homes for the next little while. Food, toiletries, books, movies. All set.

But what of those who do not have the resources we have? What we prepare for, for our comfort, they must prepare for, for survival. No doubt, the shelters are preparing as well, in mass.

Fortunately, the town that we live near, has well planned out spaces for just such circumstances. Not only paid staff, but volunteers that give of their time and talents and hearts to make sure that these folks are safe throughout these times.

What do you do when stormy times are approaching?

Now to switch it up just a bit – What about “Reg flags” in the morning?

When you wake up in the morning on “The wrong side of the bed”, when you are getting out of bed and just want to crawl back in? When you still feel tired, or when your mind will not focus. When the noises your body make sounds like bubble wrap?

What are the resources you use to get your day into order? Can you do it?

For me, coffee is always the first place I go. That first cup of coffee is like starter fluid. But even with starter fluid, the day can be rough. So what’s next? I have a couple of ideas that help, when I do them!

Both have to do with “Quietude”. A cup of coffee and a peaceful place to sit. (I do have a chair for that.) No words. Quiet music, but no words. If there are words, my brain latches on to them, and away I go. Not quiet.

Now, this quiet time might be ten minutes, or it could be an hour. That all depends. When I’m ready for words, I’ll take out my Bible, and read a chapter, or two. More than that, and too many thoughts start going around in my mind. Not quiet. But out of that chapter or two, I’ll have a sense of something to focus on for the day. Many times that will get written down in my journal.

Daily devotionals, journaling, morning pages; seem to have a calming effect, and are often very helpful.

Let’s face it though, sometimes that “Red sky” or those “Red flags” are pesky and want to stick around. And you know what I’ve found? That is OK. Sometimes we just have to lay low, and care for ourselves in a different way.

For example, yesterday, I did all the things. The starter fluid. The “Quietude”, the Bible reading, the journaling. I ended up having to just do my list of work around the house, and not turn on any (Well not much) media at all. A little book reading and a really good nap in the afternoon. A much needed disconnect.

Today seems much better. What about your “Red skies” or “Red flags”? Share with us – what resources can you volunteer?
