The Hardest Topic

This may be the most difficult topic I’ve ever had to face.
It’s the topic I’ve hidden from.
It’s the topic I’ve hidden from God.
It’s the topic I’ve not wanted to discuss.
It’s the topic that I would guess you don’t want to ponder either.
It’s the topic with symptoms I can’t even always recognize.

The topic - is Shame

One definition from the Encarta Dictionary: English (North America) says that shame
is a painful emotion resulting from awareness of having done something dishonorable,
unworthy, degrading, etc.
Shame is a deep sense of humiliation and embarrassment.
Believing one’s name may fall into disrepute, or be discredited, only serves to
bring on more shame.
This shame that comes could be real, or it could be imagined.
It really does not matter. The effects are the same.
Shame may even turn into something pathological, which is defined
 as “extreme or unreasonable”.

Shame is the antonym of innocence.
It changes who you were meant to be.
Know this about Shame;
It is an attack from the enemy of your soul!
To keep you away from God’s design for you!
You didn’t do anything wrong!
Someone else did!
It was not your fault!

Shame is different from guilt, in that to be guilty one has to have done an action on their
own of their own volition.
Guilt generally comes from a sense of responsibility for knowingly doing wrong.
Often there is remorse for some offense, crime, wrong, etc., whether real or Imagined.

Guilt is synonymous with criminality.

The wrong-doer is the perpetrator!

They were in control of the situation!

There was nothing you could do!

Someone else is the criminal here!

You can cry out to God for Justice and Restoration!

Citing the article, “SHAME STEPS OUT OF HIDING AND INTO SHARPER FOCUS” By Daniel Goleman

The New York Times, September 15, 1987, Psychologists have determined the following;

·Shame is emerging, in the view of some, as a “master emotion” that influences all the others.

Its development is being traced back through childhood and its role in a wide range of human

experience, from spurring the greatest of accomplishments to the bitterest of marital fights,

is newly appreciated.

·“Shame is a master emotion, regulating the expression of other feelings,” said Thomas Scheff,

a sociologist at the University of California at Santa Barbara,

·“Whenever shame enters the picture, we inhibit the free expression of emotion, with the

exception of anger,” said Dr. Scheff, who studies the sociology of emotions.

·Unlike other emotions, which tend to pass with time or with a catharsis like weeping, “shame

is the emotion most difficult to admit and to discharge,” Dr. Scheff said.

·Further, shame is the most private of emotions. “Shame may be one of the only emotions for

which no facial expression has evolved,” said Dr. Paul Ekman a psychologist at the University of

California at San Francisco who is an expert on facial expression. “Of course, in shame you do

not want to signal your state. Turning away or hiding the face in some way are the only objective

signs of shame.”

You get the idea.
Shame hides.
It is simply too painful to admit.
It stays hidden inside and continues to decay our souls.
If shame is something you suffer from,
I would like to give you a couple of suggestions.
Simply a place to begin, a starting point;
*Ask God to help you, by His Spirit, to search your heart.
*Tell Him all about what you are hiding inside.
*Is there just one person you can confide in?
-Maybe not the entire story, but just a sliver?
-Exposing this shame will absolutely RUIN its power over you.
*Maybe you just can’t tell anyone, however, can you write it down?
-Then give the offense to God?
-Getting this sense of shame out of your head will help to make
 shame leave your heart.

Oh boy!

I know what I’m suggesting is extremely difficult,
However, I also know that God has so much for in store for you.
Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV1984)  For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD,
“plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
You can trust Him with your heart.
The whole story or just a sliver.
Wherever you are able to start.
                                Whatever you can give Him.
Justice for you, restoration for your soul.

Be courageous!  I know you can do this,
Your peace of mind depends on it.

Good Girls Don’t …..

Good girls don’t….

 But you do.”

I’ll never forget those words as long as I live.

What kind of words are those to speak to a girl who is barely a teenager?

Scripture tells us that words have the power to bring either life or death.

Well those words spoken to me during that time, used their power to bring death.

This bio-dad of mine spoke words of death over me, his own flesh and blood.

Did he know? Did he care? That really doesn’t matter now.

The fruit of death simmered next to my heart,

rotten to my soul for the first half of my life.

Those words burned on my insides,

and confirmed that I was indeed worthless.

Their poison had soaked into the very fabric of my being.

I had no idea what God said in His word about me at the time,

so I simply acted out what I knew to be true.

I became a “Bad Girl”.

The words bio-dad said about “good” girls continued to simmer on the inside.

Proverbs 18:21   (NIV) The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

As a young mom I wondered that there must be a way to protect my children from the same mind numbing shame.

Not that they would be abused,

But I felt that somehow my “uncleanness” would somehow get on them.

It became ever important for me to find out how to keep them safe from the same fate.

What would I do with the words spoken to me?  Could the power of those words be changed?

As a young Christian, I learned that change was possible.

(Please see the Rescue page on this blog if you do not know Christ)

I found I needed God’s point of view on the matter.

Then, after reading the verses 500 times,

I read them again, and this time, they went straight to my heart.

They told me what God Himself thought about those words of evil spoken over me.

Here’s what they said;

John 6:63 (NIV)  The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing.  The words I have spoken to you

They are full of the Spirit and life.

Could it be that what God thought of me was the exact opposite of bio-dads words?

It was certainly worth a try.

So I put my trust in Him.

Over and over and over.

Those old thoughts were sticky and hard to get rid of.

Persistence and believing what God said now began to rule the life I was living.

It was a new life, a life of truth.

My history held no surprise for Him,

And God only needed for me to acknowledge HIS thoughts to begin healing.

Psalms 139:13 – 16 (NASB) 13 For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. 14 I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; 16 Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Your book were all written The days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them.

You will read these last verses probably more than any others on this blog.

These words are true.

These words are life.

These words are what God thinks.

The real truth is, it doesn’t really matter what anyone else says!

He knew you before you ever were, and made you special, for a real reason, for His glory,

and believe it or not, a real relationship with Him!

So please consider writing these verses on a card and keeping them handy.

Read. Recite. Repeat.

Fear

mean mean mean mean mean mean mean mean mean mean mean mean mean mean mean mean mean mean mean mean mean mean mean

I was four or five at the time.  Mean boys, a couple of years older than I, captured me and put me at the bottom of the tallest tree in my neighbors yard.  From there, they climbed to the lowest branch of that tree and taunted me.  “If you move, we’ll jump on you.”  “If you move, we’ll kill you.”  I didn’t know what “kill” meant, but I knew they were serious.  My heart fluttered and sputtered in my chest.  I could hear their words of torment loud even over the sound of my pounding heart in my head.

fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear fear  fear fear fear fear fear fear fear

This is the first time I can actually remember where fear entered.  The truth was that even if I did not understand the meaning of “kill”, I definately understood the the malice in their tone of voice.  There was no one there to tell me the truth, that little boys don’t “kill” little girls.  There was no one there to stop the lie.  There was no one there to tell me how special I was, or that I did not have to believe all the horrible things they said that day.

Had I known the truth, I could have laughed at them and went home to my Mom.  I didn’t go to her though.  Instead I sat there terrified and let that terror nestle close into my heart.

Whether their actions would be true or not, I do not know.  What I do know is that even with the feel of the grass itching my skinny little kindergarten legs, my full bladder screaming to be released and the pounding of my heart was not enough to move me until the two decided they were tired of their little game and went home.

Here’s what I’d like you to do today.

Learn at least one new truth about yourself according to God’s Word.

I’ve placed a couple of true statements from His Word, the Holy Bible here to get you started.

How do you know His Word true?  Or if His Word is a lie?

(If you do not know the answer to this question, then first refer to the Rescue Page of this blog.)

I’ll be here to help you, but the best thing is that God is always at our side.

Psalm 23:4* Even though I walk through the valley of death, I will fear no evil for you are with me.

Psalm 27:1* The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?

Experts say that if we repeat anything for twenty eight days, it becomes a habit.

Might I suggest that you write these truth words on a card and pocket them?  You can then pull them out throughout the day and remind yourself what God says about fear.

Your new habit will be to begin to recognize fear and your answer to it will be the Truth of His Word.

Your new habit will begin to give you some peace in your heart.

Your new habit will begin to renew your heart and your mind.
